Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

The dark horse. Aggressive pricing, very strong networking, and the only cloud where Oracle Database — still the system of record for thousands of enterprises — is a first-class citizen.

Quick Facts

At a Glance

Launched
2016 (OCI Gen 2)
Parent
Oracle
Regions
50+ (incl. dedicated & sovereign)
Differentiator
Oracle DB + Exadata in cloud
Pricing
Often 30–50% cheaper than AWS for compute
Free tier
Notably generous (4 ARM cores forever)

Basic Concepts

  • Tenancy → Compartment → Resource — Compartments are the unit of isolation & access control.
  • Realms separate commercial, government, and dedicated tenants.
  • Network is non-blocking — Oracle's claim is genuinely fast east-west.
  • Universal Credits let one credit pool cover any service.
  • Strongest in: Oracle workloads, HPC, enterprise apps lift-and-shift.

Mechanics

The OCI Edge

Autonomous Database

Oracle's marquee service — a self-managing Oracle DB that auto-patches, auto-tunes, auto-scales, and auto-encrypts. Two flavors: Autonomous Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Autonomous Data Warehouse (analytics). For Oracle DB shops, this is the path to "no DBA."

Multi-Cloud Database

Unique partnership angle: Oracle has dropped Exadata hardware physically into Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud regions. You can run a real Oracle DB inside another hyperscaler's network — eliminates egress for the DB tier.

Pricing Levers
  • Always Free — 4 OCPUs (Ampere) + 24 GB RAM, plus 200 GB storage, forever.
  • Universal Credits — pre-purchase credits used across any service.
  • Compute & egress consistently among cheapest of the major clouds.
  • Bring Your Own License (BYOL) for Oracle DB & Java.
Networking Story

OCI's flat, non-blocking network is one of its strongest technical claims — designed for HPC and DB workloads where east-west bandwidth matters. RDMA-capable bare-metal instances power latency-sensitive apps.

Trade-offs

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths
  • Aggressive pricing (esp. Ampere ARM compute & egress).
  • Best home for Oracle Database workloads.
  • Generous free tier rarely matched.
  • Multi-cloud DB story is genuinely unique.
Weaknesses
  • Smallest catalog of the major hyperscalers.
  • Smaller community & learning resources.
  • Best practices & ecosystem tooling lag AWS / Azure / GCP.
  • Sales motion can feel heavy for non-Oracle shops.
When to Pick

Where OCI Wins

Oracle DB Workloads

Running Oracle anywhere else costs more & works less well.

Cost-Sensitive Compute

Ampere ARM + free tier for startups & learning.

HPC / Bare Metal

Non-blocking RDMA fabric for tightly coupled workloads.

Multi-cloud DB Tier

Oracle DB inside Azure / AWS / GCP regions.
